Deepfakes are AI-generated synthetic media — videos, audio, or images that realistically depict real people saying or doing things they never actually said or did. The technology improves monthly, making detection increasingly challenging. But telltale signs still exist.
Visual Clues in Deepfake Videos
1. Eye and Blinking Abnormalities
Human eyes blink approximately 15–20 times per minute in natural patterns. AI systems historically struggled to replicate this. Watch for: robotic staring, too-frequent blinking, blinking at wrong moments, or irises that look unnaturally flat or reflective.
2. Facial Boundary Issues
Where the face meets the hair, ears, and neck, deepfakes often show blurring, pixelation, color mismatches, or a subtle "floating face" effect. This is most visible when the head moves or turns.
3. Lighting & Shadow Inconsistencies
AI-generated faces often have lighting that doesn't match the surrounding environment. The face may appear slightly brighter or flatter than the background, with shadows that don't correspond to the light source.
4. Lip Sync Problems
Audio deepfakes paired with video often show lip movements that are slightly off, particularly on difficult sounds like "F", "V", "P", or "B". Look for teeth that look unusually uniform, or a mouth that looks pasted on.
5. Hair and Texture Problems
Realistic individual hair strands are computationally expensive. Deepfakes often have hair that looks too uniform, helmet-like, or blends strangely with the background. Earrings, glasses frames, and fine textures also frequently glitch.

Free Deepfake Detection Tools
Tools you can use right now: Deepware Scanner (deepware.ai), Microsoft Video Authenticator, FakeCatcher by Intel, Hive Moderation, and Sensity AI all offer deepfake analysis. For images, Hugging Face hosts several free deepfake detection models.
The Most Important Check: Context
Before sharing anything shocking, ask yourself: Does this make sense? Would this person really say this? Could this video be fabricated to manipulate me? Verify through multiple credible news sources before sharing. You are the most important line of defense against deepfake misinformation spreading.
